At the trailer launch of Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan held in Mumbai on July 1, Vikrant Massey admitted that taking on a romantic role made him feel like he was starting all over again. “Honestly, I’m feeling very nervous—almost like it’s my first time again—because I’m trying my hand at a full-fledged romantic film with songs and dance. I’ve never really explored this genre in cinema. Yes, I did Broken But Beautiful on the web, but hopefully this film changes the game for me,” he said.

The actor, who has earned praise for his intense performances in films like A Death in the Gunj, Chhapaak, and the award-winning 12th Fail, spoke about how this shift came at the right time. “When I started out, I was offered a certain kind of role, and the audience appreciated me in those parts. So I kept grabbing every opportunity. But with this film, along with Santosh [Singh, the director] and Vishal Mishra, who’s a fantastic music director, we wanted to do something different. With audiences watching action-packed films back to back, this love story will hopefully offer a breath of fresh air.”

Massey also shared how Bollywood romances had always been a part of his growing-up years. “I grew up watching classic romantic films with music, drama, and dancing. Initially, I didn’t have the courage to experiment, and I was also waiting for the right story. In the meantime, the audience supported me in the kind of roles I was doing. But I realised it was time to push myself and step out of my comfort zone—and this was the right script to do that.”

The trailer launch was attended by his co-star Shanaya Kapoor—who makes her acting debut with the film—along with director Santosh Singh and producers Mansi and Varun Bagla. Shanaya’s parents, Sanjay and Maheep Kapoor, and her brother Jahaan were also present at the event. Massey praised Shanaya as a committed co-star and said he admired her preparation and honesty as a first-time actor.

Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan is a romantic musical drama adapted from Ruskin Bond’s short story The Eyes Have It. Produced by Zee Studios and Mini Films, the film follows a visually impaired musician and a young theatre artist who form a heartfelt connection during a shared train journey.

The film releases in theatres on July 11.
