Who will take the Singh is Kinng franchise forward?

Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif starrer 2008 film Singh is Kinng is all set to get its own franchise, beginning with a sequel. If reports doing the rounds are to be believed, then the sequel will either be titled Singh is Kinng 2 or Singh is Kinng Returns. However, the producer Shailendra Singh has confirmed that the sequel will not have Akshay’s Happy Singh as the protagonist. It will have a completely new character.

Updates on Singh is Kinng sequel
As per a report on MidDay, the initial work on the sequel has already started and the makers have made up their mind on converting the title of the romantic comedy into a franchise. The sequel is likely to go on floors in 2025 as the makers are eyeing a 2026 release. Speaking to the tabloid, Shailendra also revealed that the hero of the second part will not by Happy Singh. “We’ll create a new character,” he said.

The tussle of the title
Shailendra had gifted the title of ‘Singh is Kinng‘ to Akshay Kumar back in 2008. Reportedly, they tried to make a second part but the producer had asked them to return the title since he wanted to make a sequel. The tabloid quoted him as saying, “After 12 years of going back and forth with Vipul (Amrutlal Shah) and Akshay (Kumar), I finally got the title three years ago.” He also added that he’s in the process of making the sequel and will begin production in October 2025 so that the film is ready for release in 2026.

Ranveer Singh or Diljit Dosanjh: Who will replace Akshay Kumar?
The report further revealed that earlier, the makers were thinking about retaining the protagonist Happy Singh and sending him on a brand new mission to get the Koh-I-Noor diamond back to India. However, turns out that those plans didn’t quite pan out. So, the producer made up his mind to change the protagonist altogether. Since the protagonist will be a new character now, in all likelihood, the sequel won’t be lead by Akshay Kumar.

Now the question is – Who will replace him? Shailendra told the tabloid, “My first choice is Ranveer Singh. His energy, cheekiness and fun fit the character. Also, Ranveer has never played a Sardar before.” He also added that in case things don’t pan out with Ranveer, he will reach out to Diljit Dosanjh. Apparently, the same movie was earlier offered to Ranveer back in 2017 but it didn’t materialise back then. Shailendra added, “Now the time is right for both Singhs, Ranveer and Shailendra, to create magic. If Ranveer doesn’t work out, then Diljit is my next choice.” He further revealed that he’d like the film to be directed by either Priyadarshan or Anees Bazmee.
