Back in 2011 when Rohit Shetty directorial Singham with Ajay Devgn in the lead released, little did the he know that one day he would eventually end up conceptualising and bringing together his own cop universe, much like Marvel’s Avengers. The massive ambition of Rohit Shetty’s Cop Universe started taking shape with the addition of Ranveer Singh as Simmba in 2018 and Akshay Kumar as Sooryavanshi in 2021.
However, there was still no female cop in this universe. Back in 2022, at the launch event of the song Current Laga Re from his comedy film Cirkus, Rohit made it official that the fifth film of the Singham franchise will be titled Singham Again and will feature Deepika Padukone as a female cop – Lady Singham.
Now that Singham Again has hit the theatres this Diwali, bringing Ajay, Akshay, Ranveer together, along with Tiger Shroff, and Deepika Padukone as Lady Singham Shakti Shetty, fans have got an introduction to her character. Though, the movie as well as Deepika’s performance met with mixed reviews but that hasn’t discouraged Rohit’s plans for a standalone spin-off movie on Lady Singham.

Too long a wait for a female cop
Speaking about what took him so long to introduce a female cop in his cop universe, Rohit told News18 that till 2018 even he wasn’t sure if there will be a cop universe. “The wait was to get the right script and the right kind of launch for the character,” he told the publication.

How COVID played spoilt sport
Rohit revealed that it was during the making of Sooryavanshi that they first thought about making a film with “an out-and-out lady cop.” He also shared that the spin-off film on Shakti Shetty would have happened way earlier, had Sooryavanshi not been postponed due to the COVID19 pandemic. While Sooryavanshi was originally supposed to release in March 2019, Singham Again was planned for a 2020 release.
Update on Deepika Padukone’s Lady Singham spin-off
When asked about the standalone film on Deepika’s Shakti Shetty character, Rohit told the publication that the film is yet to be written. He was quoted as saying, “We have a concept in mind but we don’t know where we can go with it,” adding that “I know what the character will be like and her basic story arc but I don’t know her whole journey yet as a director or writer.”
Furthermore, he shared that there’s a reason why they laid so much emphasis on her character and her name in Singham Again. “A female-led cop film headlined by Lady Singham will definitely happen,” he said, adding that, else they wouldn’t have introduced her character at all.
