Jumanji fans, assemble! Sony Pictures has just announced that the newest instalment in the adventure comedy film franchise is heading to the cinemas on December 11, 2026. Directed by Jake Kasdan, the upcoming movie is likely to continue with Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan as the lead actors. Its screenplay is being written by Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg. Jake had previously helmed Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017’s) and Jumanji: The Next Level (2019). The new movie is reportedly being backed by Matt Tolmach, Johnson, Kasdan, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia.

The franchise traces a bunch of teenagers who find themselves trapped inside a video game. Remember the original Jumanji? Released in 1995, the dark fantasy adventure film was directed by Joe Johnston. Starring Robin Williams, Kirsten Dunst, David Alan Grier, Bonnie Hunt, Jonathan Hyde and Bebe Neuwirth, the film was inspired by Chris Van Allsburg’s 1981 children’s picture book of the same name. Shot in New Hampshire, the story was about a group of kids who turned a safari game into reality. Although it was not much appreciated by critics, the film was a major box-office hit, grossing $263 million worldwide. It was made on a budget of nearly $65 million. Jumanji is easily one of the most iconic movies released in the 1990s.

Jumanji 3 will hit the theatres just a week before Disney’s yet-to-be-titled Star Wars movie and Warner Bros/Legendary’s likely release of Dune 3 on December 18. In 2021, producer Hiram made a passing mention of a Jumanji ‘threequel’. “We’ve got a big vision for [the next ‘Jumanji’] movie. So we’re fired up for that. We’re taking it in soon. And obviously the goal is sometime after… Jake [Kasdan] is doing ‘Red One’ for us, so that is going to be next up. But sometime after ‘Red One’ comes out, Jumanji is going to be on deck. I feel like we’ll have everything ready by then and we’ll be able to get into that third instalment,” he reportedly said.
