Sharda Sinha passes away: The legendary folk singer takes her last breath on first day of Chhath Puja

Along with several Bihari language songs, the Padma Bhushan awardee also sang Bollywood songs like 'Taar Bijli' from Gangs of Wasseypur Part 2.

Legendary folk singer Sharda Sinha passed away at the age of 72 on Tuesday, November 5. Soon after the death of her husband, Brajkishore Sinha, in September 2024; she was hospitalised due to her critical condition. She had been on ventilator support for several days in AIIMS, Delhi. Among singing in multiple languages of Bihar, the Padma Bhushan awardee garnered praise and popularity with her Chhath special songs from all over the world. Ironically, she took her last breath on the first day of Chhath Puja.

Singing in various Bihari languages

After beginning her career by singing folk songs in the Maithili language, Sinha went on to compose and perform in other languages of Bihar including Bhojpuri, Maithili, Magahi and Hindi. She rose to fame by singing for not only major festivals but every celebration of Bihar that used to take place after the arrival of a new season. However, her fandom took over the world due to her songs based on Chhath Puja. Apart from singing in national events and films, the legendary vocalist performed for politicians and celebrities of the country and the world. Kelwa Ke Paat Par and Chhathi Maiya Aayi Na Duariya are a few of her most popular Chhath songs ever.

Sharda Sinha’s Bollywood songs

Along with singing in Bhojpuri movies, Sinha also lent her voice to popular Bollywood songs. From singing the Maine Pyar Kia song ‘Kahe Toh Se Sajna‘ in 1989 to one of the most famous and celebrated songs of Gangs of Wasseypur Part 2 titled ‘Taar Bijli‘, the iconic singer went on to playback more songs in Hindi films.

Medical condition

Reportedly, the popular Indian artist had been suffering from a rare disease called multiple myeloma (a type of blood cancer) since 2017. However, the recent death of her husband in September 2024, affected Sinha majorly which worsened her condition.
