Actor Sanjay Bishnoi, whose film Santosh has been nominated for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer at the 78th BAFTA Awards, is undoubtedly ecstatic about this significant recognition. However, the actor remains candid about the ongoing challenges in his career, despite being associated with globally acclaimed projects.

Reflecting on his journey, Sanjay told The Movie Mail (TMM), “I am still not in a position to choose a script; I think scripts are choosing me. Whenever I get an opportunity, I give a good audition and wait for the project. When I did the web series Delhi Crime, it gave me the chance to work with a wonderful filmmaker like Richie Mehta, and thanks to that project, another Netflix film, Thar (starring Anil Kapoor), also happened. Our film Santosh got selected for the Oscar race and was screened at the Cannes Film Festival last year, which was the moment of my life. I am very happy for all these, but at the same time, this is the journey.”

Santosh, directed by Sandhya Suri, premiered in the Un Certain Regard section of the 77th Cannes Film Festival in May 2024, where it garnered critical acclaim. Named as one of the top five international films of 2024 by the National Board of Review, the film was selected as the UK’s entry for Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards. It was slated for a theatrical release in India on January 10, 2025 but its release has been postponed due to issues with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in India.

Despite these milestones, Sanjay’s path remains fraught with struggles. Speaking about his challenges, he told TMM, “Maybe I am not putting myself out there enough; maybe I’m not doing more PR. I believe my work should speak volumes. As an actor, all I can do is act well whenever I get a chance, give good auditions, and approach directors with my interest. I’m not complaining; I knew the journey would not be easy.”

Sanjay’s latest film, Sangee, directed by Sumit Kulkarni, released in theatres on January 17. Featuring an ensemble cast including Vidya Malavade, Gaurav More, and Sharib Hashmi, Sanjay describes his role as pivotal and challenging. “The script was so well-written that every character was thoughtfully crafted. I never differentiate projects by their genre. I respect the story and enjoy the challenge of execution,” he said.

For an actor whose projects have consistently won accolades—from Delhi Crime – India’s first Emmy-winning series, to Santosh’s Oscar and BAFTA journey—Sanjay’s perseverance and humility stand as a testament to his dedication to the craft.
